Hiking for the whole family!

Nestled in the southern Adirondacks, Oak Mountain in Speculator, NY, offers a rewarding hiking experience with scenic views and a peaceful woodland setting. Although primarily known as a small ski area in winter, Oak Mountain transforms into a tranquil destination for warm-season hikes that cater to a range of skill levels.

Mountain Bike Trail Map 2022

The main hiking trail up Sacandaga is moderately challenging, making it suitable for beginners looking for a bit of a workout or more experienced hikers seeking a short, scenic trek. The trail winds through a mixed hardwood forest, with birch and maple providing shade along the way. In the early summer, keep an eye out for wildflowers lining the path, and in the fall, the foliage is a vibrant tapestry of color.

The ascent is steady but manageable, and at the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of Lake Pleasant, the Sacandaga River Valley, and surrounding Adirondack peaks.

This out-and-back hike is approximately 1.5 to 2 miles round trip, depending on your starting point, with an elevation gain of around 600 feet. It's a perfect morning or afternoon excursion, and hikers are encouraged to bring water, wear sturdy footwear, and enjoy the peaceful, lesser-traveled atmosphere of this Adirondack gem.

Whether you're staying in Speculator or passing through the region, Oak Mountain is a worthy stop for a quick escape into nature with beautiful views and a refreshing mountain breeze.

*Please note hiking is CLOSED during weddings, thank you for your understanding.  If this is the case, please choose another great hike in our area: Watch Hill or Panther Mountain.
