The need for SPEED!

Since the 2014-15 season, Oak Mountain has been building a race team. Our program has developed into a ten-week program, starting in December and ending in March, occurring on Saturdays and Sundays. Our couches set up gates every weekend for training purposes. Training includes but is not limited to fundamentals such as carved race turns, stance and balance, aerodynamics, approaching and exiting gates, equipment and ski maintenance, etc. We strive for our racers to achieve perfect form and find speed while we encourage our racers to have fun with the sport, help each other become better skiers and build lasting friendships with their teammates and coaches.

2016-17 will be our third season and we just became a USSA (United States Ski Association) Club. This will be our first step in making our racers USSA Certified, attending USSA races, and having one of our trails, Kunjamuck certified for hosting races this winter. With our participation in USSA we hope that this program will grow larger in the coming years and encourage more children to become apart of Oak Mountain’s Race Team.

Program Details:
First year race team members will be introduced to racing by our wonderful beginner race coach. The beginner race coach will fallow the same curriculum as the previous race lessons. The coach will work with the racers on perfecting their skills, teach them race techniques, work in the gates, and try to improve their time. First year racers will apply what they learn to “fun” races held on Sundays. These “fun” races will help encourage healthy competition, team spirit, and good sportsmanship while they perfect their technique and time. First year racers will also have the chance, near the end of the season, to attend a race to learn by watching racers first hand.

Returning race team members will continue on with our more advanced race team coaches, perfect their race technique learned in previous years while experiencing racing first hand by attending USSA races.
